This includes enhancements for individuals with visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities. Specifically, meeting the WCAG AA standard involves considerations such as:
4.1 Enhanced Visual Accessibility
Contrast (Minimum): This involves ensuring that text and images have sufficient contrast against the background, which is crucial for users with visual impairments.
Resize Text: Allowing users to resize text up to 200% without the use of assistive technology, enhancing readability for users with low vision.
Images of Text: Avoiding text in images unless absolutely necessary, to ensure that all text is accessible to screen readers.
Non-text Contrast: Providing adequate contrast for UI components and graphical objects, aiding users with low vision or colour deficiencies.
Text Spacing: Ensuring that users can modify text spacing without losing content or functionality, crucial for dyslexic and visually impaired users.
4.2 Improved Auditory Accessibility
Captions (Live): Offering captions for all live multimedia content, assisting users who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Audio Description (Prerecorded): Providing audio descriptions for prerecorded video content, crucial for users with visual impairments.
4.3 Usability Enhancements
Orientation: Allowing content to be presented in different orientations, accommodating users with physical disabilities who may be unable to rotate their devices.
Content on Hover or Focus: Ensuring that any content that appears on hover or focus can be dismissed, navigated to, and interacted with by users with disabilities.
Multiple Ways: Providing multiple ways to locate web pages and navigate through content, beneficial for users with cognitive and learning disabilities.
Headings and Labels: Using clear headings and labels to help users find content and understand what is presented.
4.4 Cognitive and Language Support
Identify Input Purpose: Helping users understand the purpose of each input field, especially helpful for those with cognitive, language, and learning disabilities.
Language of Parts: Specifying the language of each section of the page, aiding users who use text-to-speech or other assistive technologies.
4.5 Consistency and Error Prevention
Consistent Navigation and Identification: Providing a consistent and predictable way to navigate and identify various elements on the website, essential for users with cognitive disabilities.
Error Suggestion and Prevention (Legal Financial Data): Implementing measures to help users avoid and correct mistakes, particularly in legal and financial data input, which can be crucial for all users.
4.6 Visibility and Focus
Focus Visible: Ensuring that keyboard focus indicators are clearly visible, which is vital for users who navigate using a keyboard or other assistive technologies.
Status Messages (2.1 only): Making sure that status messages can be programmatically determined without receiving focus, so they are easily accessible to assistive technologies like screen readers.
By striving to meet these criteria, discover.sabinet.co.za aims to provide an inclusive and accessible web experience, ensuring that all users, regardless of their abilities, can access and benefit from their content and services. While some of these criteria are fully supported, others are partially supported or on the roadmap for future implementation, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance accessibility.
